Janette Beckman and Drago Publishing proud to present “Rebels: From Punk to Dior”, the debut monograph from the British-born, New York-based photographer. Covering four decades of photography, the book offers a striking glimpse into Beckman’s profound impact on the realms of art, photojournalism, music, fashion, and popular culture. Janette Beckman

Janette Beckman embarked on her career during the dawn of punk rock in London, contributing to renowned publications such as The Face and Melody Maker. She captured iconic bands ranging from The Clash to Boy George while also documenting the rebellious youth culture and pivotal moments for figures like Blondie and the Police.

In 1983, Beckman relocated to New York and became captivated by the burgeoning hip-hop scene. Her lens immortalized trailblazers of the movement, including Salt-N-Pepa, Run DMC, Grand Master Flash, Slick Rick, and LL Cool J.

Fast-forward to 2021, and Beckman’s unwavering commitment to capturing the spirit of rebellion remains undiminished. Whether photographing the dynamic Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 or collaborating with influential brands such as Levi’s, Dior, and Gucci to celebrate the subversive, Beckman has consistently proven herself as an artist deeply attuned to her era.

Janette Beckman’s work has earned a place in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of the City of New York, and the British National Portrait Gallery, Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe, in France, Nakamura Keith Haring Collection in Japan, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles and the Kunsthal of Rotterdam. She is represented by the Fahey Klein Gallery.

Publisher Paulo von Vacano of Drago, aptly describes Janette Beckman’s work as a reflection of the cultural rebels in our world. She possesses a unique ability to encapsulate the essence of our times through her photography. ‘Rebels: From Punk to Dior’ is not merely a love song; it’s a manifesto of the zeitgeist that has resonated with people throughout a photographic journey.

“I have always been attracted to cultures and people who are passionate about doing things their own way regardless of society rules. My journey has taught me there are no road maps, being an artist is just about following your passion no matter what happens.”Janette Beckman

“Janette’s pictures of artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Rakim, and Sparky D all wearing Dapper DAn Originals have captured the culture and its response to society in ways that only her signature style of photography could bring to light.”Dapper Dan

“Janette is like a mind reader, showing us images of all the cool stuff we wanna see. Her work is one OH-SHIT. After the next.” Adrock (Beastie Boys)

“Janette Beckman’s photographs are an extraordinary illustration of the determination and the rebellious strength of many girls today. When I look at them, I think of all the girls I know and get to meet, starting with my daughter, from whom I learn so much, and who has such amazing energy and curiosity. Janette’s images narrate a female solidarity that exists beyond stereotypes, which conveys so well the emotions and intentions that drive my collections.”Maria Grazia Chiuri
